Application - Macquarie 2027 Graduate Program, Sydney (Job ID 24170)

Byron Jones | I make a numerical call, then I get held to it.

Final-year Commerce student at Macquarie, majoring in Accounting and Finance, graduating November 2026. Two and a half years inside Downer Group's finance function, forecasting cashflow across a 30,000-person payroll and explaining the variance every single month.

The short version

A finance student who already works like an analyst

I am in my final year of a Bachelor of Commerce at Macquarie University, majoring in Accounting and Finance, graduating November 2026 with a WAM of 70. My finance electives are Derivative Instruments and Advanced Corporate Finance, which is where discounting, risk and valuation stopped being theory and started being mechanics I could actually build.

Alongside study I have spent two and a half years at Downer Group running cashflow forecasting and variance analysis over a payroll base of more than 30,000 employees and contractors. That work is a forecast, then a real outcome, then an explanation of the gap, every single month. The Graduate Program spans accounting, risk, corporate finance, markets and data - the areas I already think in and want to build a career across.

01 - Accounting

Reporting, forecasting and advice the business can act on

Macquarie's accounting stream covers financial reporting, forecasting, tax and regulatory reporting, and advice to teams across the business. That is a precise description of my current job. At Downer I run the cashflow forecast each cycle, reconcile it against actuals, and write the variance reporting that finance and non-finance managers both rely on.

The regulatory side is not theoretical either. I helped lead the transition to new payday super obligations across the entire 30,000-person payroll - a live compliance change with a hard start date - on top of payroll tax, superannuation and legal provisioning lodgements that have never been late in two and a half years.

A forecast is only useful if someone can act on it.

02 - Risk

Honest numbers beat optimistic ones

Risk work means identifying, assessing and managing what could go wrong so decision-makers get sustainable outcomes. At Downer I work inside a compliance framework where every forecast feeds decisions other teams rely on, and where being optimistic with a number is worse than being honest with a bad one.

I treat every variance the same way: is this timing, volume, rate, or an error worth escalating? Deciding that a movement is a genuine problem - and saying so - is risk judgment in miniature, and it is a habit I would bring straight into a risk rotation.

Being optimistic with a number is worse than being honest with a bad one.

03 - Data

Forecast, actual, explain the gap - every month

At Downer I pull data from payroll, tax and general ledger systems covering tens of thousands of transactions, isolate the drivers behind each material variance, and decide whether the movement is timing, volume, rate, or a genuine error worth escalating. Getting that wrong has consequences, so I do not take the first plausible explanation.

That loop - predict, observe, decompose the error, update - is what data work in a business like Macquarie actually demands. Respect the data, find the driver, and write it up so a non-specialist can act on it.

Predict, observe, decompose the error, update.

04 - Markets

A participant since sixteen, not an observer

I have followed markets since I was sixteen, when I pushed my dad to open a minor trust account for me through CommSec so I could actually start investing rather than just reading about it. That was years before I had any professional reason to care, and it is why the interest has held.

It also means my instinct with a price is to ask what it implies rather than whether it is high or low. In my own valuation work I built a full three-statement DCF from scratch, then used Goal Seek to solve for the implied WACC that would equate the model to the market price - backing out what the market already believes. That is the instinct I would bring to a treasury or markets rotation.

The price is information. The job is to read it honestly.

05 - Pace

Examine it from every angle, then deliver

Macquarie asks graduates to examine problems from every angle, challenge the status quo and deliver at pace. My working life already runs that way: no missed statutory lodgements across payroll tax, superannuation or legal provisioning in two and a half years, and I led the transition to new payday super obligations across the entire 30,000-person payroll - a live regulatory change with a hard start date and no grace period.

I have done all of this while carrying a full-time role and final-year study at the same time. I am used to a workload where the deadline does not move because I am busy, where attention to detail is not a preference but a requirement, and where being roughly right late is worth nothing.

The deadline does not move because you are busy.

Why Macquarie

Why this program specifically

I am applying for the 2027 Graduate Program (Spring Intake) in Sydney. I graduate in November 2026, so I am in my final year now - exactly who the program is built for. Three reasons, all of them honest.

A generalist program, used deliberately

The 12 to 24-month program starts with a tailored orientation at Sydney HQ and opens doors across accounting, risk, corporate finance, markets and data. That breadth suits me: I want exposure across the streams before I specialise, and I want to be useful in each rotation, not just pass through it.

57 years of unbroken profitability

That record is not luck - it is a culture of examining problems from every angle and challenging the status quo. Challenging the first plausible explanation is literally my monthly job: every variance report I write starts by asking whether the obvious answer is actually the right one.

I want to be taught properly

The program's on-the-job training, senior leader access and structured learning are built to close gaps fast. I know where my gaps are, and I would rather learn from experienced professionals than teach myself an approximation of the standard. Curious and eager to learn is exactly what the ad asks for - and how I already work.
